The Dos and Don’ts of Visiting San Diego

“America’s Finest City” loves visitors! So much so that we welcome more than 35 million guests to our beautiful city annually. And while we certainly don’t expect you to know all of our secrets, there are nevertheless some things you may want to make sure you’re aware of before you begin making yourself at home. To that end, here are some simple “Do”s and “Don’t”s for San Diego visitors.

Do…

Treat yourself to a guided tour of some of the city’s most popular sights. San Diego offers countless tours via trolley, bus, and even boat!

Don’t…

Expect to see everything San Diego has to offer in a weekend. While we’re glad you’re stopping by for any length of time, we have SO much to offer visitors that you’d really only be scratching the surface by setting aside just a few days.

Do…

Make sure to build in some time to visit our spectacular beaches. San Diego’s beaches are among the most beautiful in the world, and we’ve got one to suit every style. Not sure where to start? Let us help you decide which beach is right for you.

Don’t…

Be too concerned about sticking to your diet while you’re here. San Diego is such a world-class foodie destination that we wouldn’t want you to miss out on the magnificent menus offered by our local eateries. From America’s best Mexican fare to fresh-caught seafood to pan-Asian, Mediterranean, Italian, and much more, you’ll want to leave the calorie-counting back home.

Do…

Pay a visit to our diverse and fascinating city neighborhoods. Each has its own feel and rhythm, and offers a very different experience. The laid-back vibe of Ocean Beach is a local favorite. We’re big fans of the distinctly small-town SoCal feel of La Jolla. Hillcrest’s farmers markets, the Gaslamp Quarter’s lively bar and restaurant scene, and Little Italy’s fantastic restaurants and art galleries are also all must-stops.

Don’t…

Forget your sunscreen! San Diego has far more sunny days than not, and you don’t necessarily need to be lounging around on the beach to pick up a bit of a burn. So apply early, apply often, and stay safe.

Do…

Visit Balboa Park. This stunning patch of urban green space is far more than just a gorgeous nature enclave. Balboa Park is also San Diego’s museum center and includes well more than a dozen world-class exhibit halls featuring everything from automotive history to aerospace to fine art.

Don’t…

Forget to take a break to watch one of our legendary sunsets from a breathtaking vantage point. There’s no bad place in San Diego to watch the sun dip below the ocean, but if you need a bit of advice, check out our guide to San Diego’s Best Sunset Spots.

Do…

Make a point to visit our spectacular local attractions. SeaWorld San Diego has been delighting kids of all ages for generations. The San Diego Zoo and Safari Park are world-renowned for a reason. And LEGOLand California is another stop with a little something for everyone.

Don’t…

Overpack. We’ve all had the experience of packing for a getaway like we’re running away from home. But San Diego is a really easy, breezy destination, and you simply won’t need a bursting bag to be very comfortable here. Need some tips?
