Plan Your Shelter Island San Diego Staycation

It’s a common phrase that San Diego locals say: “We live where others vacation.” Living in a town as laid back and gorgeous as our city is, it’s easy to feel like you’re on a trip when you take your lunch break. So if you’re looking for an escape but don’t have time for a full blown getaway — why not plan a staycation in your own backyard with an escape to Humphreys? Read on for our take on the best things to do during your Shelter Island San Diego adventure.

Visit Shelter Island Pier

Shelter Island Pier is an angler’s paradise. Halibut, bass, and boneheads are plentiful here, so it’s a great place to drop your hook — no fishing license required. The views are also gorgeous and unobstructed, affording panoramic views of the soaring San Diego skyline. Then, when you’ve pulled all you like from the bay, head over to Fathom Bistro Bait & Tackle, and enjoy their selection of craft beer and bar bites with an amazing view.

Biking the Island and Beyond

Cycling has proven to be one of the most popular activities on Shelter Island, and for good reason. The island’s circumference-circling bike path is perfect for visitors looking to get in some physical activity while sightseeing. Whether you want to go farther out into Point Loma or are just looking for a short spin around our little slice of paradise, you can look forward to a pleasant ride. San Diego is a very easy city to navigate on two wheels.

Walk the Shelter Island Loop

Speaking of exercise, Shelter Island is an easy span of land to walk. A complete circuit of the island’s very pedestrian-friendly shoreline circumference along the footpath known as the Shelter Island Loop is only 2.3 miles. Many who walk for health or leisure make use of the island’s footpath to enjoy the weather, the views, and the many attractions along the route. If you’re looking to get in your steps for the day, there’s no better place to do it!

Enjoy the Water

There are a lot of places in and around the area that are on the bay. Shelter island is actually IN the bay — the isthmus extends into the water, so it’s surrounded on all sides. Because of this, getting out and enjoying the waters of the bay is always a popular pastime. We recommend heading over to our neighbors at Next Level Sailing and chartering a trip on the yacht America. They offer tours, whale watching treks, and more. Or, just grab a chair by the beach, enjoy the calm bay breeze, watch the boats sail by on San Diego Bay, and check out the paddleboards and kayakers cruising by the marina.

Check Out Shoreline Park

Shoreline Park is a serene swath of green space complete with a playground, so it’s always a great option for families traveling with kids. In addition to lush picnic areas and abundant space to stretch, visitors can enjoy several slides, a swing set, and a climbing structure, plus there are gorgeous panoramic views of the water any time of year. Take it easy while the kids play, and don’t forget to bring your sunscreen — or your camera.

Visit the Friendship Bell

Yokohama, Japan is one of San Diego’s sister cities. The Friendship Bell, which sits at the southwestern tip of Shelter Island, was presented to the city in 1958 as a symbol of our healing relations post-WWII. The massive cast-bronze bell was designed in a style reminiscent of the Bonshō prayer bells used in Buddhist practice and is housed in a traditional pagoda structure that protects it from the elements. It still stands today as a testament to the power of unity.
