An Essential SD Day Trip: Shelter Island Biking and Whale Watching

About 2 month(s) ago by Humphreys Half Moon Inn & Suites

A One of a Kind San Diego Adventure Awaits

Bike riding and whale watching: If you play your cards right, you have both in a day. With so much of San Diego’s
culture devoted to the great outdoors, two of the city’s signature activities can be enjoyed throughout the city, and
within a short distance of our Shelter Island hotel. Take it from us: It’s quite the itinerary. Get up early enough,
and you can get in an invigorating ride, plus a front-row seat to the majestic sight of whales breaching courtesy.

Tips for the Trip

San Diego may be famously mild, but you should still prep accordingly for what lies ahead. In addition to what
you’ll need for biking—comfy gear, water, sunscreen—you’ll need more of the same for your whale watching
Flagship Cruises suggests each of those items, plus anti-nausea medication as needed, a hat, multiple
layers, and, for extra enjoyment, binoculars.

Shelter Island to Seaport Village

Home to astonishing views on either side, Shelter Island itself boasts three scenic miles of bike paths if you want
to keep it local. Our most favorite and scenic bike route begins mere steps from your room and is about 3 miles
around the island.

Another popular route is to head from here to Seaport Village. A great choice for riders more intent on taking in
everything around them than getting an intense workout, this 5.81 mile trip takes you down gently curving shores,
past several green parks, and straight to your destination.

Whale Watching With Flagship Cruises

You’ve made it with plenty of time to spare. With trips departing twice daily, you’ll be able to reach Seaport Village,
lock up your bike, and grab a bite to eat before boarding the Marietta, Flagship Cruises’ two-story whale watching
yacht. Once out on the water, you’ll be awestruck by 360-degree views, as well as the extraordinary knowledge of
your tour guides from the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography. After 3.5 hours of sightings and a return
to dry land, you’ll once again have the chance to check out the sights of Seaport Village, or you can choose to bike
back to Humphreys Half Moon Inn for some much-deserved relaxation.

Looking to stay somewhere with bike rentals and access to top Shelter Island activities?
Humphreys Half Moon Inn has plenty of
